Friend of God: A Rescue That Reveals the Gospel

Mar 22, 2026    Joel McGarvey

We’ve all found ourselves in situations we couldn’t fix—places where we felt stuck, overwhelmed, or even defeated. Genesis 13–14 reminds us of a powerful truth: when we cannot rescue ourselves, God steps in.

In this passage, Lot is taken captive, helpless and unable to free himself. It’s a sobering picture of our own condition apart from God. But the story doesn’t end there. Abraham rises and goes after him, risking everything to bring him back. This dramatic rescue is more than a historical moment—it is a vivid foreshadowing of the gospel.

Abraham’s bold rescue of Lot points forward to the ultimate rescue we all need from sin—a rescue that only God can accomplish through Jesus Christ. Long before the cross, God was already revealing His plan to save, redeem, and restore His people.

As we approach the celebration of Christ’s death and resurrection, this passage helps us see that the gospel is not an afterthought—it has been God’s plan from the very beginning.

Join us this week as we continue our series Friend of God: Learning Faith from Abraham and discover how this ancient story speaks directly to our deepest need today.

No matter how far you’ve wandered or how trapped you may feel, you are not beyond God’s reach.
