Friend of God: Decisions That Echo

Mar 15, 2026    Joel McGarvey

In Genesis 13, Abraham and his nephew Lot reach a turning point. Their herds had grown so large that the land could no longer sustain them together, and conflict began to arise between their herdsmen. Rather than allowing the situation to escalate, Abraham graciously gave Lot the first choice of land.

Lot lifted his eyes and saw the fertile plains of the Jordan Valley. It looked prosperous, well-watered, and full of opportunity. From a purely earthly perspective, it seemed like the obvious decision.

But Scripture quietly adds an important detail: the cities nearby were Sodom and Gomorrah — places already known for their wickedness.

Lot made a decision based on what looked good, not on what was spiritually wise. Over time, that decision would pull him closer and closer to Sodom and the moral corruption surrounding it.

Meanwhile, Abraham remained where God had placed him and continued trusting the promises of God.

Genesis 13 reminds us of a powerful reality:

Decisions rarely end in the moment we make them. They echo into the future.

Choices about where we go, what we pursue, and what influences we allow into our lives can shape our direction for years to come.

Lot’s decision seemed small in the moment, but it produced consequences that affected his family and future.

Our decisions work the same way.

Some choices echo for a moment. Others echo for a lifetime.

And that is why wisdom, humility, and trust in God must guide the choices we make.

Because our decisions matter—and they echo farther than we often realize.
